Research suggests a direct relationship between vitamin D deficiency in children and a higher propensity for developing childhood allergies than their better-nourished counterparts. Interestingly enough, the same study showed no such relationship exists within adults. Researchers looked at blood samples of 3100 children and 3400 adults collected for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). During their analysis, they were able to compare sensitivity levels to 17 different... read full post

People who have healthy levels of vitamin D tend to not get sick as often as the rest of the population. The problem is, according to a number of different studies, the abstracts of which are readily available online, most people do not get enough vitamin D.

One of the reasons for this is that, let's face it, most of us do not sunbathe regularly (sunbathing entailing wearing only a swimsuit or less), and there simply aren't enough foods rich enough in the absorbent form of the hormone commonly mistaken for a vitamin to gain sufficient amounts from diet alone.

That brings us to supplementation, which according to the Endocrine Society, is something all of us should strongly consider. The when it comes to vitamin D supplements is to make sure the label says "D3" (cholecalciferol) and not D2 (ergocalciferol). While the former is technically a hormone and the latter technically a vitamin, the benefits of the former relative to human health and immunodefense far outweigh those of t... read full post

A new website has gone live and is taking the concept of "niche" to a whole new level. VitaminD3.org, as the name might suggest, was founded with a mission to cover all things related to vitamin D and D3 in particular. This includes a blog where the latest news, research and developments related to vitamin D3 and its effects on the human body will be covered in-depth.

Additionally, the site will link out to news stories from around the web relating to vitamin D and in particular research about the nutrient and its effects relative to the prevention and potential curing of various diseases and illnesses.

Finally, the site will feature a minor online store component in which the only product that will be offered for sale is --- you guessed it --- vitamin D3 supplements. At present, the company only offers shipping to destinations within the United States of America, however the site's owner has gone on record stating an intention to expand into Canada and eventually even parts o... read full post

‘Malnutrition in children’ is a problem that looms large and will almost certainly overwhelm us if it remains unaddressed. As of now, 1/3 rd of the 2 billion people worldwide who have micronutrient deficiencies reside in India. Again, more than half of the 6000 ‘under –5’ child deaths a day in the country are malnutrition related .
It is important to remember that the problem of malnutrition in children is linked inextricably to a number of other issues like maternal under nutrition and in – vitro under nutrition. In devising strategies to counter child malnutrition, therefore, we should aim at comprehensive, all – encompassing solutions. Simultaneously we must also recognize that malnutrition in children is an important aspect of the larger problem and we need focused interventions to deal with it.
There are nearly 1 billion malnourished people in the world. rural areas.

There is a world of difference in terms of the relative quality of the myriad brands of nutritional and dietary supplements on the market today. Buyer beware: Not all vitamins and supplements are created equal.

In general, almost everything you'll find at a drugstore, grocery store, GNC and most other supplement retails (including online retailers) offer little-to-no nutritional value as the poor quality of ingredients combined with poor manufacturing quality results in a capsule or pill that amounts to little more than expensive urine.

However, the good news is that there are a handful of manufacturers of nutritional supplements that actually offer products that are worth buying, and that do offer tangible benefits to one's health. The author of the article linked to below goes into detail regarding specifically which supplements are a waste of money and which actually offer bioavailable nutrients that will be absorbed for use by the body rather than simply be excreted at the... read full post
