Panetta says US must keep up pressure on al-Qaida

WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is pledging to keep up the pressure on al-Qaida.

At his formal swearing-in ceremony, the former CIA director said that if the U.S. remains committed to that fight, then it ultimately will succeed in denying safe havens for the terrorist network.

The 73-year-old Panetta was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden. It was a ceremonial act because Panetta was officially sworn in July 1, his first day as Pentagon chief.

Biden joked about they decided to hold a second swearing-in.

Biden said some people noticed that Panetta has flown home to California several times already and they worried that he had changed his mind about taking the job.

Michael McConnell have acknowledged repeatedly that up to 2006, many of the valuable leads pursued by the intelligence community came from the three prisoners who were subjected to harsh techniques that included waterboarding in order to secure their cooperation.
