The United States Food and Drug Administration has as corrupt a reputation as any agency in the federal government. While corruption in government is nothing new, the problems it causes become exacerbated when the decisions being made have a real impact on people's health and people's lives. There is a debate raging over the introduction of what are being termed "biosimilar drugs". Some are calling for extra scrutiny given the complex nature of the drugs. In December 2011 the U.S. House of Representatives introduced The Research Works Act (H.R.3699), a bill that will ban public access to publicly funded research. Creative Commons notes: "One of the primary proponents of the The Research Works Act is The Association of American Publishers, who describe the bill in a press release: > The Research Works Act will prohibit federal agencies > from unauthorized free public dissemination of journal > articles that report on research which, to some degree, > has been federally-funded but produced and published > by private sector publishers receiving no such funding. The report shows that the federal government has spent $35.38 million to "help pay for the stages, confetti, balloons, food, and booze for their political conventions." We paid billions to develop the thing and now we're paying people to buy them. Shocking... Well, maybe not..
