Gilder tells the the exciting story of the emergence of quantum theory and the struggle it ignited over uncertainty and who entanglement helped settle it.

Great for nonscientists like me, she tells it by giving us the matter of fact and down to earth conversations and letters of the people who were in the thick of it. We meet Einstein, for instance, in a whole new way, and in a chilling segment, we hear Hitler screaming at Max Planck who has made an appeal on behalf of his Jewish colleagues.

A brilliant piece of history writing.

Laura Gilder's look inside the souls of the men (and rarely women) who wrestled with the uncertainties of Quantum Physics and its implications for humanity, shown intimate, carefully researched conversations and letters.

She brings this exciting story about the future down to earth, where it belongs.

  1. raphaelo  @Crane13 All your selection of Quantum Physics books are so interesting.. my friend :) Tweeted there to world wide ;)

One of the best of many books about physics I've read. As Lindley takes us back to uncertainty, as principle as well as a characteristic of the times, Lindley brings giants, like Einstein, Bohr, Pauli and Heisenberg, vividly to life as real people with real shortcomings and penetrating insights.

The subject is fascinating and Lindley has done a good job of bringing it into sharp focus.
