"Older Is Better for Hunting Dogs - Research examines key demographic variables of Nicaraguan canines". Dr. Jeremy Koster, University of Cincinnati anthropologist and lead investigator, recently examined key demographic variables such as age and sex on the amount of harvested game that dogs contribute from subsistence hunting in an indigenous community. Very interesting article, and we are grateful for kindly mentioning CARES! http://1.usa.gov/xrzJGe

The promise of quantum computing, i.e. computing with the weird quantum effects associated with individual atoms, is a world in which calculations that are basically impossible on a conventional computer are accomplished in milliseconds. Today’s ultra-secure cryptographic codes, for example, could theoretically fall to a quantum computer faster than you can say “I just pwned the world’s entire financial system.” So it’s a big deal that in October Lockheed Martin paid $10 million to a company called D-Wave for a “128 qubit” quantum computer.

We’re familiar with the statistics: Women own about 40 percent of the private businesses in the United States, according to the Center for Women’s Business Research. But according to Astia, a group that supports women-led small companies, women make up less than 10 percent of venture-backed start-ups.

A number of studies published in recent years have conclusively determined that a relationship between vitamin D receptors and vitamin D3 in a more general sense are directly related to alopecia, or premature hair loss, definitely exists. However, despite the mountains of evidence compiled between all of the various studies, the scientists and researchers continue to insist that the nature of the relationship remains unclear.

Research suggests a direct relationship between vitamin D deficiency in children and a higher propensity for developing childhood allergies than their better-nourished counterparts. Interestingly enough, the same study showed no such relationship exists within adults. Researchers looked at blood samples of 3100 children and 3400 adults collected for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). During their analysis, they were able to compare sensitivity levels to 17 different... read full post

People who have healthy levels of vitamin D tend to not get sick as often as the rest of the population. The problem is, according to a number of different studies, the abstracts of which are readily available online, most people do not get enough vitamin D.

One of the reasons for this is that, let's face it, most of us do not sunbathe regularly (sunbathing entailing wearing only a swimsuit or less), and there simply aren't enough foods rich enough in the absorbent form of the hormone commonly mistaken for a vitamin to gain sufficient amounts from diet alone.

That brings us to supplementation, which according to the Endocrine Society, is something all of us should strongly consider. The when it comes to vitamin D supplements is to make sure the label says "D3" (cholecalciferol) and not D2 (ergocalciferol). While the former is technically a hormone and the latter technically a vitamin, the benefits of the former relative to human health and immunodefense far outweigh those of t... read full post

Imagine there was a scientifically complicated subject which was difficult to understand even if you had all the information. Imagine it would take you days, weeks, months to educate yourself on the subject. Imagine the subject had more rampant misinformation published than virtually any other subject published in the last 5 years. Imagine how long it would take you to assess the reams of conflicting information on the subject. Imagine the subject was further mired in political and religious controversy.
