Is there something a bit odd about killing people and then calling their friends and family on the phone to express condolences?

I'd add "humanity-raping" in there somewhere because the focus certainly isn't on sustainability.

The U.S. State Department last week said it was reviewing alternate routes for the planned Keystone XL pipeline to avoid environmentally sensitive territory in Nebraska. That decision could move final approval, originally expected at the end of this year, to after the 2012 presidential elections in the United States.

“This does underscore the necessity of Canada making sure that we are able to access Asia markets for our energy products,” he was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying. “And that will be an important priority of our government going forward.”

The Canadian government said a heavy crude oil pipeline would get built to carry oil from tar sands projects in Alberta province one way or the other. The direction of that pipeline would depend on the end consumer.

Killing any progress proposed for energy independence for the US seems to be the theme of the Administration and a do-nothing Senate. Are the "greenies" and radical environmentalists going to be allowed to continue to stall everything that would increase our economic productivity? Environment, my foot! At every turn they want to begger us, make us like Europe, and create a Socialist climate on every level. How many jobs would be created with just this one project let alone others that have been proposed? Stagnation. These radical, irrational Left-minded thinking people are one of the main reason for our economic down-turn.

This rather unsettling article in the Washington Post lays out what the State Department is doing now in Iraq.
They are preparing to have a huge presence there, though not as large as the military's has been. War-contracting commission co-chair, former Rep. Christopher Shays, worries that it will become another war contracting debacle.
The operation would have been even larger if Congress had not seriously cut back on funding it. The State Department will be taking on quaisi-military duties and will be highly challenged to make it all work after our military presence is gone from the Iraqi landscape.
