Article about the relationship between the lack of mobility due to the bad shape of the residential housing market, and the impact on the labor market. One of the causes of the lingering high unemployment is the inefficiency created by potential and qualified workers that can't move where the jobs are, because they can't sell their homes for a decent return. In these times, apparently renting is better than owning (mobility is key to remain employed). The recognition of telework as a viable option for federal employees reflects preconceptions of industrial age and factory mentalities that have finally caught up. The possibility that productivity could actually improve still seems to escape the logic for some supervisors. (I've been a mobile employee with laptop computer and dial-in or Internet access since 1992!) President Signs Federal Employee Telework Legislation | Bill Leonard | Dec. 10 | shrm.org Sounds like a progressive step to reduce government costs - but is there anything Republicans will not say "No" to? .@ramonbnuezjr Re: http://bit.ly/b6Pxz9 I think what offends me most isn’t just that we’re number 16 on the list but that we have spent countless tax dollars to get there. And we are more than just 16th we are a distant 16th when you realize that it’s not like we are even close to catching up with the leaders. Korea is better than 3x’s faster. Hong Kong is better than 1.5x’s faster. Even countries like Romania, the Netherlands, and Latvia are close to 1.5x’s faster. That is just unacceptable when we have access to the same or better technology that all the rest do and yet we can’t get close except in a few small test markets. Worse still is when you realize we pay more for our broadband service that most any other major country. It’s time that we truly demanded that our broadband be brought up to the standards that others in the world have.
