Amplify Science California is an immersive and engaging core curriculum authored by UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science and built specifically for the NGSS.

Amplify Science California is a brand-new blended science curriculum for grades K-8 that meets 100 percent of the Next Generation Science Standards. A rich blend of digital learning tools and physical materials, the multimodal program includes: detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, scientific texts, robust simulations, engaging media, physical and digital models, formative assessments, CA benchmark assessments, and a variety of embedded teacher supports and professional development options. With Amplify Science California, students learn to talk, read, write, think, and argue like real scientists and engineers through investigations of real-world problems and scientific phenomena, gaining the skills needed to master the NGSS.


The University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science is a recognized leader in PreK-12 science education, producing groundbreaking curriculum products for more than 40 years, including the international award-winning Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading®. The Hall’s curriculum materials are used in one in four classrooms across the nation.

Real-world, problem-based experiences

Every unit in Amplify Science California has students taking on the role of a scientist or engineer in order to investigate a real-world, 21st-century problem. Through their investigations, students are exposed to a diverse range of scientific fields and career paths.

Research-based, multimodal approach

Through a proven, multimodal approach, Amplify Science California students learn to do close readings of scientific texts, build visual models of their understanding of scientific phenomena, use digital simulations to collect evidence, and craft oral and written scientific arguments based on evidence.

Ongoing teacher support

Curriculum should be more than a dropped-off kit and list of instructions. Amplify Science California focuses on supporting the teacher at all levels. From an online teacher’s guide and lesson-specific differentiation strategies to robust professional development, teachers of Amplify Science California feel comfortable, confident, and excited to teach.

DO First-hand investigations are an important part of any science classroom, and Amplify Science California has students getting hands-on in every unit, from building models of protein molecules to experimenting with electrical systems.

TALK Student-to-student discourse and full class discussions are an integral part of the program. Students are provided with numerous opportunities to engage in meaningful oral scientific argumentation, all while fostering a collaborative classroom environment.

READ Students read scientific articles, focusing their reading activities on searching for evidence related to their investigation, and importantly, on asking and recording questions as they read through fascinating texts on 21st-century topics.

WRITE Following real-world practices, students write scientific arguments based on evidence they’ve collected, making clear their reasoning about how a given piece of evidence connects to one of several claims.

VISUALIZE By manipulating digital simulations and using modeling tools to craft visualizations of their thinking— just as real scientists and engineers do—students take their learning far beyond the confines of what they can physically see in the classroom in an exciting and authentic way.
